Nigel Julian and Peter Randall have done a superb job with this book Lots of cracking photos that hadn t been published before engaging text that has been fastidiously researched and a good layout that makes it easy to follow This is a wonderful collection of photos and interesting narrative about Thunderbolts #and unit personnel of the famous and extremely effective 56th Fighter of the US Army Air Forces #unit personnel the famous and extremely effective 56th Fighter Group of the US Army Air Forces Air Force in World War II I ve always been partial to the P 47 s and the aces of the fighter group nick named Zemke s Wolfpack Great photo reproduction and terrific and rare color shots The verbiage is eually impressive with a clear focus on detail and historical accuracy The book is a real treasure I am so pleased the author s made this project a true work of love and they have clearly made themselves experts in their field They have preserved some great airpower history Great job guys You ve set the bar for unit histories pretty high I give this book my highest recommendation for airpower historians fans of the 56th Fighter Group Thunderbolt fans and scale aircraft modelers This book cannot disappoint it s terrific I bought this book hoping to find a great collection of photos of the 56th FG which I had not seen before Mission accomplished The authors have done a great job compiling lots of rare photos from private collections and taking the time to research all of them as well Each photo has an informative caption usually with the names of everyone in the picture and information about any planes which are shown There s a wide variety of color photos as wellWhen dealing With A Group As a group as as the 56th it would be easy to fall back on lots of pictures of the aces who helped make the group so notable such as Gabreski Johnson Zemke Schilling Mahurin and Christensen The authors don t fall into that trap and that makes this book better While all the aforementioned names are featured several times in the book there are lots of photos of many other pi. The only US 8th Army Air Force fighter group to retain the mighty P 47 Thunderbolt throughout its combat tour in the European Theater of Operations the 56th Fighter Group justified its nickname of 'Zemkes Wolfpack' by the aggressive attitude and tactics instilled by its original wartime commander Hub Zemke This attitude continued through to VE Day under the auspices of his successors Dave Schilling and Lucian Dade and it became the top scoring 8th Air Force group for victories in air air combat Justifiably considered one of the greatest tacticians and leaders in VIII Fighter Command Zemkes leadership engendered an esprit de corps that was second to none Fighting High Publishing brings together historians Nigel Julian and Peter Randall to tell the story of the Wolfpack complimented by a foreword from the Groups wartime leaders son Hub Zemke Jr The two authors Zemke's Wolfpack: A Photographic Odyssey of the 56th Fighter Group During the Second World WarWaffe combat veterans especially true in 1943 and early 1944 The pictures and the writing show how capricious life could be how the pilots and crews lived and how extraordinary was the machine that carried them from start to finish the P 47 a rugged barrel with wings on the ground but an agile angel in the sky that always seemed to now the way back to England Though many times their ships were badly battered and seemed damaged beyond repair they returned To Fly Another Day It fly another day It all there in the book along with the Honour Roll of the airmen who never made it home This work above all reveals what made it all possible individual courage dedicated determination tenacious leadership and the indomitable spirit of all who served with 56th All fighter pilots since will forever stand in their shadow Great subject well covered lots of new photos and information Bad news is the point size of the type is small and colored in a medium gray makes it a pain to read If it gets reprinted the type color should be a BLACK so it can be easily read by us poor visioned readers if possable incease the point size Worth owning just for all that it contains "the authors should be thanked for their excellent work Thanks guys I just received this book but can already "authors should be thanked for their excellent work Thanks guys I just received this book but can already that it deserves 5 stars The many photographs both black white and color are printed crisply on a nice bright glossy paper I haven t read it yet but the photo captions which make up the bulk of the text appear to be very detailed The photo captions are printed in a gray ink that could make them a little harder to read for some people but I like them because lots of black text on the page would have detracted too much from the photographsMy one complaint the page would have detracted too much from the photographsMy one complaint at is that they reduced the price just after they got the book in stock I had pre ordered my copy well in advance to ensure that I got the best price If I had waited I could have saved a few dollars It makes me wonder what is the point of the pre order price guarantee. Ial events maintenance and repairs which together with detailed captions make this a visual and information feast The modern day legacy is recorded with a section depicting memorials to the 56th Fighter Group A full honor roll of those who made the ultimate sacrifice is included along with details of all confirmed claims by the Groups air air 'Aces'Table of ContentsForewordIntroduction1 Logistical Support2 Mission Planning All in a Days Work3 Ground Crews Keeping em Flying4 The Republic P 47 Thunderbolt Cave Tonitrum5 Armament Our Flying Shermans Pack a Punch6 Babies Gas its All about Gas the uest for Longer Range7 Maintenance Stripping Engines and Knuckles8 Accidents Battle Damage and Crashes9 Wolfpack Nose Art10 Dogpatch A Morale Boost Thanks to Al Capp11 Off Duty Rest and Relaxation12 Visitors to the Wolfs Lair13 Air to Air Aces of the 56th14 Honour RollInd. Lots ground personnel and day to day life on A WARTIME AIRBASE THERE ARE SOME GREAT PHOTOS OF wartime airbase There are some great photos of artwork as well as many showing the dangers of aerial combat and the wonderful ruggedness of the P 47 Thunderbolt The 56th was the only group in the 8th Air Force to fly the P 47 Thunderbolt during its entire deployment in England so this book is a bit of an homage to this excellent aircraft as wellI ve seen other reviews in which people mention the gray color of the captions and the difficulty reading them I d have other reviews in which people mention the gray color of the captions and the difficulty reading them I d have agree to some degree the lighter color of the captions did make them difficult to read I d have liked to see some combat or gun camera footage as well but that s just my personal preferenceOverall a really good book on the 56th FG and a definite must have for any Thunderbolt aficionado outstanding uality for the value for money This book is clearly a labor of love by authors Peter Randall and Nigel Julian Their pictorial look at the legendary 56th Fighter Group of WWII s Mighty Eighth is well worth your time They have meticulously culled through photo records of this storied unit and compiled a fascinating history of the unit s P 47 s and the men who piloted and maintained them Almost without exception the individuals are identified by name and home town in every picture which personalizes this collection The 56th lives on in the form of the 56th Fighter Wing at Luke AFB in Phoenix and uses the same unit heraldry as the WWII fighter group So zip up your A2 #Jacket And Put On #and put on Glenn Miller records and enjoy this excellent book that pays tribute to some of our Greatest Generation heroes Just a beautiful work and elegantly written with detail only a flight mechanic and a maintenance chief could fully appreciate More than a photographic paean about the noble selfless men of the 56th Fighter Group who flew each day against the German war machine and were often times young men not than 20 just out of flight school flying against far experienced Luft. Re the owners of the websites at 56thfightergroupcouk and littlefriendscouk respectively universally acknowledged as the two finest sites on the 56th and VIII Fighter Command Having researched the 56th Fighter Group for many years they have established an international reputation for their expertise in the history of this famous unit Looking beyond the Thunderbolt flight line the authors have delved deep into their own extensive collections along with the 56th Fighter Group museum archives and the many private photograph albums made available to them by veterans and veterans families in order to produce the most in depth photographic record of the Wolfpack and its associated service units published to date More than 400 photographs the majority of which are previously unpublished show views from behind the scenes alongside newly discovered aircraft noseart soc. ,
