The first 170 pages of this book "are excellent I found it absolutely gripping to follow this history unfold through primary source documents These "excellent I found it absolutely gripping to follow this history unfold through primary source documents These newspaper accounts court papers medical evaluations and Pierre Rivi re s own account of what led him to murder his mother sister and brother The reader has to be the judge of whether Rivi re was actually mad or if he was he just driven to the breaking point by the intolerable people he had to suffer by living in their midst If the book ended with the end of the primary documents I would have given it 5 Stars However the next 118 pages are a slog to get through Eight scholars including Michel Foucault proceed to deconstruct the crime the sociopolitical reasons for the crime and the criminal process as it existed in 1835 Normally this would be the good part but these essays were written in 1975 and they are heavy and dull If you are a Foucault scholar you ll like it as a lot of his later work on insanity punishment and sexuality must have been informed this case But some of the analyses are sand dry If I had to single out the most readable and illuminating essays at the end I would suggest those by Philippe Riot Robert Castel and Foucault I LOVED this book I would suggest those by Philippe Riot Robert Castel and Foucault I LOVED this book have to warn whoever reads this review that the edition I read DIDN T have the analysis from Foucault so I probably have been spared a lot of bullshitI understand why some people hate it but my experience has been uite enjoyable I have anylised it from my medicine student point of view reading the opinion that a bunch of white class men over a century ago have regarding a young man that in my opinion had an easily recognisable unusual mental developement I have thought many times look at this asses they have NO idea what they re dealing with but I KNOW how AWESOME is nowledge etc That s why it s been fun I have also thought about people in our society who get judged as idiots and wonder when will we stop considering the extremes of the Gauss distribution as undesirable and be acceptable and welcoming To be honest I m glad he illed that horrible mother of his There I said it Had to read it in a criminology class Best title ever I enjoyed this book on a number of levels but in the first place for the first 170 pages in fact as a gripping murder mystery and for this alone the book was a terrific read There is a pretty big clue as to who dunnit in the book s title and that is not the mystery The crime itself as the title reveals is sufficiently grotesue to ensure we form a very rapid opinion of the need to apprehend the perpetrator The mystery which arises then is what should we do with this murderer this parricide This story is not fictional We are presented with a series of contemporary documents written at the time 1835 by many different actors in this affair each contributing a slightly different perspective so that we are confronted not with a single consistent story of what happened but with a mixture of slightly different not fully overlapping stories and commentaries in which the impressions are disjointed leaving the reader without help from the editor of the book to become increasingly engaged in the process of in. To free his father and himself from his mother's tyranny Pierre Rivière decided to ill her On June 31835 he went inside his small Normandy house with a pruning hook and cut to death his mother his eighteen year old sister and his seven year old brother Then in jail he wrote. .

St because I m a peasant doesn t mean i m stupid we can see elements of this framing of the issue of murder in the contemporary media where sociopaths Tu Passerai Per Il Camino Vita E Morte A Mauthausen kill for no reason allegedly yet there are reasons why peopleill all the time its framed as senseless or cold blooded but then when you dig deeper there are motives and the murderer is not as insane as people are led to believe Pierre Riviere was a young man whom for about 170 years ago in a small village in France illed his mother sister and brother What

Moi Pierre Rivière ayant égorgé ma mère ma sœur et mon frère Un cas de parricide au XIXᵉ siècleTerpreting the conflicting evidence and then in making #a judgement not only regarding the facts of the matter but also regarding our response to the opinions # judgement not only regarding the facts of the matter but also regarding our response to the opinions various witnesses including medical experts who disagree with each other Do we think that Pierre was a vicious criminal or a deluded madman or a dismal idiot and do we consider that the appropriate penalty should be his execution or a form of protective custody to protect the public The second part of the book comprises a collection of very brief essays on different aspects of the case and in many ways like the earlier documents these extend the effect of causing the reader to uestion earlier judgements in the light of new insights I certainly think it is possible that other readers like myself will change their minds than once before the end regarding the sanity or culpability of Pierre Riviere Without a doubt this case history covers issues that remain topical two centuries later The antiuated concepts and theories of the time are amusing or to some people annoying I imagine but it is futile to complain about the culture and prejudices of a different age but they do not in all honesty differ very much from "a modern debate on the same topic What I find impressive is that Foucault had the insight to leave "modern debate on the same topic What I find impressive is that Foucault had the insight to leave to form their own opinions confident that in the process he would achieve his goal which was not to defend or condemn Pierre Rivere nor the diverse witnesses but to demonstrate that justice emerges from a social process to meet all sorts of competing objectives it was a dossier a case an affair an event that provided the intersection of discourses that differed in origin form organization and function the discourses of the cantonal judge the prosecutor the presiding judge of the assize court and the Minister of Justice those too of the country general practitioner and of Esuiro and those of the villagers with their mayor and parish priest and last but not least that of the murderer himself All of them speak or appear to be speaking of one and the same thing at any rate the burden of all these discourses is the occurrence on June 3 But in their totality and their variety they form neither a composite work nor an exemplary text but rather a strange contest a confrontation a power relation a battle among discourses and through discourses Picked up a second edition of this book definitely off the beaten path as far as Foucault is concerned not one of his major works I found it to be provocative in that he basically shows well there are justifiable reasons for a child to murder his mother and sister then there are several crappy essays by people who are not as brilliant as Foucault the uestion of sexism is ind of emerging at the time of its publication mid70 s so gender in this book seems to be a growing issue Why the mother and not the father but again the whole testimony given by Pierre Riviere is The Diaries Of Jane Somers kind of sexist but it boils down to gee my mother was a total bitch she treated my father like a dipshit so Iilled her and my sister gee i m a peasant who is totally illiterate so nobody thinks I can give reasons they depict me as a sociopath in the media but I had good reasons ju. A memoir to justify the whole gruesome tale Michel Foucault author of Madness and Civilization and Discipline and Punish collected the relevant documents of the case including medical and legal testimony police records and Rivière's memoir The Rivière case he points out occ.

Michel Foucault Ebook Moi Pierre Rivière ayant égorgé ma mère ma sœur et mon frère Un cas de parricide au XIXᵉ siècle Picked up a second edition of this book definitely off the beaten path as far as Foucault is concerned not one of his 'major' works I found it to be provocative in that he basically shows 'well there are justifiable reasons for a child to murder his mother and sister' then there are several crappy essays by people who are not as brilliant as Foucault the uestion of sexism is kind of emerging at the time of it
